About

George Britton is an English photographer based in London who has recently completed his BA (Hons) Degree in Photography. He has worked on projects that portray human presence, such as: ‘New Normal’ (2019), a body of work that documented life throughout the Covid-19 Pandemic with particular emphasis on the spaces in which we were confined. Also, ‘Gone but Not Forgotten’ (2023) which focused on the phenomenon of childhood amnesia and the concept of how revisiting memories may help to prevent these from being permanently lost. Further projects include ‘Stateside’ (2022) and ‘Done and Gone’ (2023). George is currently working on ‘Dream Sequences’, his final university project which takes inspiration from cinema, an area in which George is particularly interested to pursue in the future.

On the one hand George is drawn to human presence and focuses his work on portraiture both in a street setting and in the studio. Having developed a passion for street photography, George enjoys capturing natural moments as well as staged scenes which allow him to make use of elaborate lighting and composition.

George has also taken a keen interest in film stills photography, taking influence from other photographers as well as concept art for film and television. Preferring to be an inconspicuous observer of a setting, George utilises the subject’s surrounding environment whilst experimenting with composition and lighting. He is intrigued by the authenticity of the process, producing works that both explore photography as a more truthful medium as well as projects that blur the line between fact and fiction. Inspired by a love of cinema and its storytelling, George aims for his photographs to take a narrative form.

Whilst having an interest in traditional portraiture, George is currently exploring ways in which this particular form can be challenged, such as capturing scenes that are not typically photographed, as portrayed in his ‘Dream Sequences’ project which, for example, photographs objects in their unnatural surroundings.
